Message from Ronan O’Neill, Publisher of My GCSE Science

” When I was 3 years old, my mum became a part-time auxiliary nurse. She ended up staying with the NHS until retirement, 40 years later. In her 20s, she cared for her children during the day, then worked evening shifts at the hospital and full days every other weekend. It was hard work, difficult to manage and the pay wasn’t great. But she loved her job. My younger sister went on to become a GP, recently having to get decked out in PPE…

Being an NHS parent can be tough, and it can be tough for their children too. That’s never been more the case than now. This pandemic is affecting all of us, but none more so than those working in the NHS and their families. For some on the front line, their lives are literally at risk. For many others, shifts are longer and more stressful. Meanwhile their children are either stuck at home or facing restricted lessons at schools staffed by skeleton teams of committed teachers.

As teacher and parents, we at My GCSE Science hope that schools will have reopened by September. However it’s clear that disruptions will continue through the next school year. In-school education will not return to full normality until a vaccine has been developed and the population fully vaccinated. That will take time. Meanwhile, the effects of the pandemic will continue to impact parents working in the NHS and their children.

We’ve been considering what we can do. Deeply discounted access to our resources will be of major help. Our concise but comprehensive video tutorials have always been used as a distance learning solution. Many students on extended medical absence, for example, have used My GCSE Science as their sole source of preparation and still achieve excellent grades in their exams.

Year 10 students, especially, are facing a significant challenge. They are missing out on a lot of valuable learning time and their GCSE exams are only one year away. We can provide access to your child from now right through to 30 June 2021, after their GCSE exams. Nothing can match high quality classroom teaching, but our learning platform is the best alternative to learning science in school, and an excellent complement to classroom teaching.

Our Progress Tracker provides structure and motivation for teenagers (prone to procrastination at the best of times and especially disorientated at the moment). The 9-1 GCSE science specification is superb, but the sheer amount of material is intimidating for a 15-year old. Our video tutorials and Progress Tracker help break this down into manageable chunks. As a parent, you can log in remotely (with your child’s credentials) to see how they are getting along.”

We’re forever grateful for the NHS and we’re delighted to welcome the children of NHS parents to My GCSE Science.
